Smoothie of the Week: Basil-Banana Foamy

I have soooo much wonderful fresh basil that I am going nuts trying new recipes* of all kinds-- pesto, tea, lemonade, and of course, this beautiful and delicious Sunday morning smoothie.  Remember that the original premise for Victoria Boutenko's green smoothies is 60% fruit, 40% greens and the greater proportion of fruit mellows out the stronger tones of the greens.  Basil is a slightly spicy, zesty green herb.  The word, basil, comes from βασιλεύς (basileus), meaning "king" and it can be traced back about 5,000 years to Iran, India and other tropical areas of Asia.  There is a lot of myth wrapped around the meaning for the word, but in any case, many culinary herbalists agree that it is "the king of the herbs".  You can read more about it here (note the health affects and the fact that it is toxic to mosquitoes).

  • 4 ripe organic bananas, peeled
  • Liquid from 1 young coconut (optional)
  • Small handful of fresh organic Basil leaves
  • Large fresh edible squash flower** (optional)
  • Filtered Water as you desire (I used about 20 oz. for the two of us)

Put all the above into the Vitamix carafe and spin up until homogenous and foamy very delicate light yellow-y green.   Consume with great pleasure-- I felt it warm as it descended down my throat (probably something to do with the eugenol essential oil, the same chemical responsible for the clove-y smell in cloves).  Lovely!

** Fresh organic squash flowers have the most beautiful sweet scent-- reminiscent of our grandmothers' gardens from long ago... I just happen to have a lot of flowers and no squash this year boo hoo...
