Blueberry Ambrosia Green Smoothie

I got a little carried away with social networking this morning and forgot about eating.  Now, that tends to sound like a good thing for someone who could likely live on a desert island (but not a dessert island, haha) off the resources of several years of eating well, but what generally happens is that I get really hungry later into the evening and risk going into the *see-food diet until I finally haul myself off to bed. (*I see food, I eat it)  I am 64 years old.  I know now that if I skip meals, I end up hungry and hunting.

So, the best fast meal that I know of is a green smoothie.  And the most satisfying for me, in the place where I am at, sort of craving to feel full, but also wanting that not-too-sweet, fruit-and-greens combo, is a smoothie I refer to as Blueberry Ambrosia.  It has that plump silky yumminess of the old "fruit ambrosia" salad recipe that I remember from afternoon teas at some church as a young person.  My own mom actually never bothered fussing with dainty, yummy recipes, so I know that she didn't send it along with me (I was an inveterate tea-server as were all the young teens in my day who had any church connection in small-town Saskatchewan). But someone else's mother or grandmother took the time to make it, repeatedly, and I salute them with this thick smoothie (no, it is not 'thickalicious'-- there is no trademark oatmeal in this one).

INGREDIENTS:
1 Banana, Chunked (organic)
1 C. Frozen Blueberries (organic)
1 C. Frozen Mango (organic)
1 T. Chiaseed, ground in Coffee Bean Grinder
2 Handfuls of Tender Greens
2 C. Coconut Dream

Whirl up in your blender until thick and silky smooth.  Blueberries let no green shine through, so it will be a dark purply, brown colour.  The fruit and berries are filled with health phytonutrients that most of you are aware of, so don't be worried about "nasty carbs".  The coconut milk has medium chain fatty acids that help pump up the immune system, and the chia seed is the highest plant source of Omega-3 essential fatty acids, good for heart and brain health.

I think you'll love it!

Aloe Vera Smoothie

I originally had an aloe vera smoothie video here that demonstrated a recipe using (wild?) aloe vera and suggesting that a leaf of potted aloe vera, peeled, could be used instead.  The recipe in the video used citrus fruit (orange, lemon, lime), berries (goji) and mango, but there are quite a few variations that you can follow.

Today I am using 1 C. frozen blueberries, an apple (minus the core), and the aloe vera with about 4 cups of water in my Vitamix.  The benefits are listed below-- I'm using it for some breathing issues that I have for which a small study has shown some possible benefits (asthma) but it is a general all-round healthful green.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF ALOE VERA

*immune regulator: helps to restore the body to balance after illness
*soothes and heals eczema and burns
*healing to ulcers in the digestive tract
*contains protein, calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamins A, B12 and E, essential fatty acids and is naturally rich in Vitamin C, amino acids, enzymes, germanium (a mineral that may help with cardiac disorders)
*is laxative and an excellent cleanse. However, if you experience any cramping or diarrhea, stop use.

*Contraindications: Do not use aloe vera if you are taking the following medications: oral corticosteroids, such as beclomethasone, methylprednisolone, or prednisone-- this misuse of aloe vera may lead to developing a potassium deficiency and experiencing of other toxic effects from the medication.  Please check with a pharmacist or your doctor re your own medications not listed above.

Smoothie of the Week: Grapefruit-Kefir Jolt

This Grapefruit-Kefir Jolt is not a smoothie for sissies -- by this I mean that it is not sweet (although go ahead and add extra sweeteners of choice) and the probiotics in the kefir married with the natural antioxidants and fibre in the grapefruit and the blueberries might lead to some.. hmm... movement.  You will feel clean and energized!
Add the following to your blender canister and blend up:

  • 3 washed, chopped ribs of Celery
  • halfed Grapefruit (both halves), peeled, with much white left (remove pips)
  • 1 C. plain Kefir (or store-bought)
  • 1 C. frozen Blueberries
  • 3-4 C. filtered Water

Smoothie of the Week: Emperor Blueberry Smoothie

This Emperor smoothie originally appeared in the first issue of the Smoothiemoves ezine, but I'm updating it a little here so that it can be made for 2 people (and I have cut out the expensive MLM "juice")

  • Soak about 6-10 natural almonds in 2 oz. of organic Orange Juice
  • Grind up 2 T. Flaxseed in coffee grinder
Add to the Vitamix canister in the following order:
  • 1 C. Frozen organic Blueberries

  • 1 T. Hemp Protein Powder
  • 1 organic Apple, cored, seeded and cut into segments
  • the Almonds and soak juice
Whirr until smooth.  Eat it like ice cream with a spoon, or if you want to drink it, add more fluid (water or organic orange juice.

Smoothie of the Week: Cherry-Choco-Banana-Berry-licious Smoothie

Today's smoothie is super-delicious and full of super antioxidant zing....  I ordinarily don't use processed juices in my smoothies, just as I don't often (maybe once or twice a year) use dairy yogurt.  This is definitely on the "treat" list-- maybe a smoothie to serve when your mother-in-law is visiting?  As I have said before, if it is too difficult to digest, be sure to take your full-spectrum enzymes before, during or after you drink the smoothie.  Enjoy!

1/2 C. organic baby spinach
1/2 cup fresh Almond milk (10 soaked almonds & water in blender)
1/2 cup cherry- pomegranate juice (or one or the other)
1 tablespoon Free-Trade organic cocoa powder, not Dutch processed
1 cup frozen cherries
1 banana
1 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons chia gel (1/4 C. chia seeds in 1 qt. water)

Smoothie of the Week: Lemon-Blueberry Bliss

This smoothie is so tasty and SOOO healthy-- I was looking for something with a little zing (lemons!), antioxidants (blueberries!), energy, protein, and omega3s ('new superfoods':hempseed protein and chia seeds!), but also sweet (stevia drops!).

This is a winning, thirst-quenching, energy-building, good-feeling-making smoothie. You can add other ingredients if you don't have the ones that I used (eg.,flaxseed for chia seeds) but I would really suggest you try this one if you have the means....

Add to the canister of the blender (I use a VitaMix) the following:
~1-2 Cups Frozen Wild or Organic Blueberries
~1/2 Cup Hempseed Protein
~1/4 Cup Chia Seed Gel*
~1/4 Cup to 1 Cup Fresh squeezed Organic Lemon Juice
~Filtered Water to blend (as much as required) & Stevia drops to sweeten (I used about 1/2 teaspoon)
~1 packet of Stevia sweetener (or sweetener to taste) (optional)
Blend up and drink up and enjoy!

*to make Chiaseed Gel, place 1/4 Cup of whole chiaseeds in a quart mason jar and add water to the top. Stir until the seeds are dispersed. Let absorb the water for at least 15- 20 minutes. Stir again. Put on lid and keep in the fridge to use with other recipes. Provides a high source of protein (4 gm in an ounce), fibre, calcium, magnesium, and more Omega3's than any other plant source, including flax seed. Use the "whole seeds" and not milled seeds. There is some indication that milled seeds lack the nutrients.

Sunshine-Shopping-Smoothie (Heaven)

I'm enjoying a terrific day here-- went shopping at the Sally Anne and came home with a stack of great fitness and gardening mags and a wonderful and recent Vita-Mix Whole Foods Recipes Book <--for 99 cents!

Then we had my all-time-favourite smoothie to date-- tasted like "summer in a glass":

  • 4 ripe Apricots
  • huge handful of fresh-from-the-garden Cilantro
  • 1 C. + frozen organic Blueberries
  • 3 frozen Bananas
  • Liquid and Meat from a Young Thai Coconut
  • 2 T. Ground Flaxseed (ground in coffee bean grinder)
  • 4-6 oz. of Filtered Water
This recipe provided both my husband and I with about 20 oz. of sheer ambrosia.  Aren't Green Smoothies just the bomb?
